Why Submit to Volta.?

volta. is a submission-based sanctuary for the unclassifiable—a digital pulp poetry+ journal for people who write. Because this space is built directly by those who consistently dig through the trenches of the page, we know that poetry isn’t a set of rules or a positioning of academic prowess; it’s an urgent, trauma-ridden, messy, and necessary disruption of silence. We do not care about credentials, institutional approval, or polished pedigrees; we care about the poignancy of compelling, authentic voice which pushes the power of the written word to its poetic limits.

This online poetry+ journal is run by a collective of formally-trained writers who know the individual labor, the solitary grit, and the false starts of the craft. We are the ones spending our nights scratching out lines in a notes app, bleeding into a notebook, or pushing against the boundaries of language because we have to find the turn. volta. is a publication born from the very act of writing. This is not a cold museum built to display immaculate, polished products—it is a working ecosystem emerging from the raw reality of creation.

Core Tenets:

  • We believe the edge is the sweet spot. If a piece of writing fits neatly into a traditional box, it isn't for us. We educe the processes within experimental spaces where genre begins to fray at the edges, pushed to its limits by the sheer force of the writer's intent.

  • We honor the authentic process. We respect the raw over the refined, elevating the jagged truth of authors’ heartbeat scribbles over the hollow perfection of scholarly quibbles. We cherish the individual process—the holy, frustrating, beautiful trial of building a text—over the clinical finality of a polished and categorically perfected product.

  • We value the writer’s voice. This is not a hierarchy; it is a riot. We believe that the power of the word belongs to the person who writes it and the people who listen, not the institution that critiques it. There are no gatekeepers—just a democratically mediated space for the human voice to stand entirely on its own terms among peers.

  • We embrace embodied experience. Words should be felt in the marrow, not just processed in the brain. We seek work that bypasses the intellect to strike the senses—poems you can smell, taste, and hear vibrating in your teeth. We want the text to sweat, itch, and howl with the substance of sensation.

We aren't interested in what poetry should be. We are only interested in what it is. It’s a loud, pulpy pull of process and passion, and it’s ours. Bottom line:

it’s fucking poetry.
